Insider's Guide to Santa Fe
The spirit of the Southwest comes alive in New Mexico's colorful desert capital.

Striking pink adobe architecture. Neon blue skies. Soaring Sangre de Cristo Mountain peaks. Stunning sunsets. Culture that never quits. That, plus a wealth of outdoor activities and social opportunities (festivals, dining, hiking and gallery-hopping, to name a few) is what makes Santa Fe a spectacular summer destination.

DAY TRIP
A scenic, meandering drive through the Sangre de Cristo Range on the 59-mile High Road to Taos will give you a real look into the rural New Mexican lifestyle. If you don't want to go all the way, the Santuario de Chimayo in Chimayo, local weavers and woodcutters in Truchas, and the 18th-century Church of San Jose in Las Trampas are all well worth a visit. If you do make it to Taos, stop at Doc Martin's Restaurant in the historic Taos Inn for blue corn enchiladas and a Horny Toad margarita.

FESTIVALS
Highlights of Santa Fe’s summer festival season include the International Folk Art Market (July 14-15, folkmarket.org), Spanish Market (July 28-29, spanishmarket.org) and Santa Fe Indian Market (August 18-19, swaia.org). On weekends, the Santa Fe Society of Artists holds outdoor art shows in the parking lot of the First National Bank on the Plaza, across from the Museum of Fine Arts (santafesocietyofartists.com).
